Match Report
St Andrew's College 1st XI vs  Grey College
On: Friday, 08 Mar 2019
Venue: Away

The first match of the 2019 hockey season proved to be a tough challenge for the talented but inexperienced College side when they encountered an organized and skillful Grey College side in East London. Eight of the fourteen players were playing their first match at 1st team level. Although the side had the first attack, they were pinned in their own half for most of the first twenty minutes as the team struggled to keep possession and deal with the opposition attacks. Two excellent penalty corner goals and two further field goals were the result of the pressure which Grey put on the College side. The second half saw a different College side take more control of their possession and enjoyed a territorial advantage for the rest of the game. The Grey defence held firm despite a more composed approach in attack, and the possession and pressure did not culminate in any serious threat to the Grey goal. The last five minutes saw the Grey side stretch the College defence and despite some superb goalkeeping from Jonathan Shamwana College conceded a fifth goal in the last minute. Although dejected by the result, many of the players felt very positive about the improved second half and were deeply analytical about the performance as a whole questioning the areas that require focus.
